Switching to Energy-Saving Solar? How much will switching to solar energy lower my electricity bills every month? Get all your questions answered here
NEM is one of the options for you to generate electricity from your own solar PV system, and offset or reduce your electricity bills. This system is designed to provide you credit for any excess of solar energy you generate. It is then used to offset your next electricity bill. This way you can save on your electricity bills and also protect yourself from rising costs of electricity in the future. A bi-directional meter will be installed for these types of connections, and you must ensure that adequate communication signal is available since meter reading will be done remotely.
SEDA Malaysia is the Implementing Agency for NEM. Further information can be obtained at www.seda.gov.my
NEM Assessment Study (NEMAS) for installation above 72 kW. It is done by Distribution Licensee (TNB). The studies shall be conducted by the DL or its appointed consultant to establish the technical and safety requirements and determine the feasibility of the connection.
The requirement for a mandatory study is generally based on the rated kW of the proposed installation as shown table below:
| Installed Capacity | Study Required | Fee of Study |
| 1-72 kW | No | - |
| >72 kW - 180 kW | Yes | RM1,000.00 |
| >180 kW - 425 kW | Yes | RM5,000.00 |
| >425 kW - 1 MW | Yes | RM8,000.00 |
| >1 MW - 2 MW | Yes | RM15,000.00 |
| >2 MW - 5 MW | Yes | RM20,000.00 |
| >5 MW - 10 MW | Yes | RM30,000.00 |
| >10 MW - 30 MW | Yes | RM40,000.00 |
Solar panels will still generate electricity during cloudy or rainy days with the incident light. However the electricity generated will not be as much as during the bright day light.
That depends on how much electricity your home or business uses, where you live and several other factors. The total area of your roof is one of the major factors to determine how big of the system size that you are able to install. In the best condition, you may be able to zerorise you bill.
Your solar panels will start generating usable energy for your property the day they’re installed. It will be reflected in the next billing cycle.
The Government of Malaysia has introduced the Green Technology Incentive, Income Tax Act 1967 to boost the renewable energy in Malaysia. The Investment Tax Allowance (ITA) and Income Tax Exemption (ITE) are covered under this effort.
Solar panels have zero moving parts to break and required the least maintenance, about once a year. The most you’ll have to do to maintain your solar panels is make sure they’re free of dust, leaves, and other debris. You’ll also need to trim branches that may get in the way of your solar panels. Whatever’s obstructing your panels will make for less efficient energy production.
No. Excess energy exported is credited in electricity monthly bills on a one-on-one offset basis.
No. The excess amount will be carried forward to the next month. You will have 24 months to use is before it will be forfeited.
Reputable solar panels that we use, offered warranties that last between 20–30 years, and 5 to 10 years for the inverter.
Solar panels will protect your roof from damage and solar mounting do as little damage to your roof as possible.
It is important to choose qualified solar PV installer. Quality material, good installation and maintenance ensure that your solar {V system is safe. In addition, please ensure only solar experts (like us) handle your solar PV system. Do not try to do-it-yourself.
Not yet for now. TNB is working towards making that happen.
Yes, it will be good to include solar installation work in the construction plan.
No it is not. FiT or Feed-in Tariff is a mechanism for granted selected customers to export all solar energy produced to TNB grid and the quota has long been fulfilled for solar. The main difference is NEM mechanism allows you to generate your own energy and use it to reduce electricity bill. You can sell the excess energy to TNB and we will offset it in the next electricity bill.
Yes. There are several financing for solar PV provided by Malaysian Banks.
